Another book I'm forced to buy...

I run an OpenBSD firewall at home and I have learned a ton from Jacek's ONLamp articles in the past. It looks like I won't be able to resist the pull of his new book

Looking for Software Engineers

I recently left the world's largest software maker to join the world's largest bookseller. Somebody is going to make a psychological statement about my (un?)healthy fascination with "world's biggest" things. Go figure. I'd assert that they are both in the Seattle area and both world class organizations.

Staffing

I'm staffing a team of software developers to work closely with systems and network engineers. We'll be working on internal tools and processes, automated network device configuration, network monitoring, IP address management, load balancer configuration, etc. I'm actively accepting resumes for review. These jobs aren't yet posted on the external website, but will be soon. If you are interested, please send your resume here cbrown@atbash.net. I'll contact Seattle-local developers in person to answer any questions, and I'm available by phone for non-local candidates.

Qualifications

Ideal candidates for senior positions will have 5+ years development experience in C/C++, mentoring or lead experience, in-depth understanding of networking concepts in TCP/IP, DNS, publish-subscribe messaging, multicast, and routing protocols (OSPF). Additional highly-valued skills include Perl, Java, mentoring or lead experience. Degree in Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering or equivalent experience is required.

Why the iPod is becoming the center of my universe

ipodnmac.gif I recently switched jobs (another worthy topic of discussion at some point) and I've altered my commute status as well. Previously I was driving my Bimmer (see previous entry) to and from work each day, mostly listening to NPR but also using my iPod with an iTrip. My new job is in downtown Seattle and each day I take the bus, which is a 1/2 hour trip each way. My iPod is my new best friend, along with whatever book I'm reading at the time. Currently it happens to be Jacques Barzun's The House Of Intellect
Since the iPod figures so prominently in my day, I've been looking at all the accessories available. Some of them are amazingly cool, starting with the iPod armor (which I own). Next is the wonderful Smartwrap so useful if you have the added cord length of the remote dangling around. For those of you still driving your single-occupancy vehicles, check out the latest Alpine stereo. Last but not least, parts and batteries.

New generation?

hippy-bella.gifMy daughter is nearly 4 years old and already shows hippy tendencies. I'm predicting bell bottoms and peace signs in her future. If she asks for a VW bus, I'll be polishing my shotgun and looking out for her potential boyfriends.

Finally growing up

CAR.gif I'm finally growing up. We've got two small children and their car seats don't exactly fit in the back of the Bimmer. I'm selling it for 20,000$ US if you are interested... It's a 1999 328is with leather interior, 6 cd changer, extended warranty through mid-2006.

A special sense of humour

bagtag.gif I had to share this find. I recently purchased a high-quality computer sleeve from a small boutique manufacturer. I was checking if it could be washed. The photo is the attached tag with the washing instructions in both English and French. The English is exactly what you would expect and so is the French, for the first 6 lines. The last three lines of French are most interesting. "We are sorry that our President is an idiot. We didn't vote for him." Given recent strained relations between our two countries, it's good to see that not all Americans agree with the current administration.
